Inform and empower entities, citizens and businesses for safe and mindful tourism
On 13 July the Agency for Integrated Rural Fire Management (AGIF), in partnership with Turismo de Portugal, held a webinar on ‘Tourism and Rural Fires – Best Practices for Holidaying Safely’. The webinar took place as part of the 2018-2020 Plan for the Empowerment of the Tourism Sector and Tourists in Fire Risk Situations.
Given today’s environment, it is essential that Portugal, recognised internationally as a world-class tourist destination, is seen as a safe destination that offers unique and clearly innovative tourism products and services. AGIF and Turismo de Portugal have been implementing projects and initiatives to inform and empower entities, citizens and businesses for safer and more mindful tourism.
A new awareness of sustainable tourism must be created, adapted to the challenges of climate change and the high risk of rural fires. Because Portugal is one of the countries with the greatest forest cover in Europe and is a popular destination for nature-loving holidaymakers, all activities related to nature tourism are, therefore, more exposed to risk, particularly rural fire risk, and as such preparation, self-protection and safety measures must be adopted.
The webinar focused precisely on these issues, at a time when most Portuguese citizens and tourists were preparing for the summer holiday season, to ensure that their days of leisure are as safe and mindful as possible.
